The Cuil search engine (www.cuil.com) went live this week after reams of publicity that tout the new site as a Google killer. What a disappointing debut!

I ran an ego search and got eight hits total, seven relevant. Each relevant hit related to my association with PC-Doctor.

I ran the same search on Google. Results: 654 total hits. I stopped counting after five pages of relevant hits. What differed? In addition to my association with PC-Doctor, Google listed my past associations with Microsoft, Sun Micro, Apple, Scientific Solutions and others. Continue reading

Mac Notebook and iPod Updates in September?
Mac Rumors – AppleInsider claims that Apple resellers have received notice that MacBook, MacBook Pro and iPod supplies will become constrained in the coming weeks. Apple expects to decrease production of these models and, as a result, Apple is recommending that resellers stock up on supplies now to last them through August.

FujiFilm FinePix Z200fd gets Stateside Release and Price, Couples Beware
Engadget – The 10-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD, 5x image stabilized optical-zoom lensed FinePix Z200fd is finally coming to the states in September for a price of $299.95. Fuji has kept all the cosumer-friendly features like dual image stabilization, dual shot mode, and a novel group timer mode that only takes the picture once it sees four face in the frame. Next-Generation iPod nano to be Taller (Zune-Like)?
Mac Rumors – iLounge reports that the next generation of iPod nano may sport a taller screen, matching the iPhone and iPod touch’s screen aspect ratio of 1.5:1 and up from the 1.33:1 aspect ratio found in the current iPod nano display.

Microsoft Research Thinks Telescopic Pixels will Rival LCDs
Engadget – The boys and girls at Microsoft Research are getting set to publish a report detailing a competing (and in their perspective, superior) technology to replace the LCD monitors we’ve grown to know and love heart with reservations. By using pixels that boast “a pair of mirrors to block or transmit light,” displays could theoretically be created which are “faster, brighter, and more power efficient than liquid crystal displays.” Continue reading

New Search Engine Cuil takes Aim at Google
Slashdot – CNET reports that Cuil (pronounced ‘Cool’), a startup founded by the husband-and-wife team of Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson, is launching a new search engine today that claims to index three times as many Web pages as Google.
