Hello all

After running PC Doctor 5 on my IBM T61 Thinkpad... I get the msg TCP/IP communication test failed-remote host could not be connected.

It is a new machine and i am unable to understand where the problem is!!! as there seems to be nothing on the net.

the reason why i ran the test is that my LAN connection shows a speed of 10MBPS only and the connectivity is too slow to do any work.... much less download or upload anything!!! pls help....

Hello ifiknewIT,

That communications test attempts to find and contact another system on the network to determine if communications are possible.  For the test to pass you need to have another system on the network that it can communicate with.  Additionally both systems must not have firewalls set up to block 'pings'.  If your T61 is the only system on your network and your router doesn't reply then the test will probably fail.  The most likely cause is an add-on firewall.

That being said, I don't think this test will tell you why it's so slow.

10Mbps is too slow.  I would investigate two things.
1. Check that the switch/router/hub you are connected to supports 100Mbps.  If not, it might be a good time to get a new gigabit switch/router.  (The switch/router/hub is the box that the other end of your network cable connects to if it doesn't go into a wall.)
2. Check the configuration settings for your NIC (network card).  I think a lot of the T61 systems have Intel Gigabit NICs.  These NICs have a setting in their properties page (in Control Panel) to adjust the speeds it will run at.  It might be mistakenly set to 10Mbps.

BTW, Nice notebook!

Thanks for replying.

1. for net i am using navini ripware modem, and i dont know how to find out what speed it supports

2. in the detailed test log of pc doc i can see the speed set for NIC is 10 mbps, but how can i cahnge it is also something I dont know

Please help me

I'm not sure how the Navini modem connects to a PC.

Is it connected over an ethernet cable directly to your notebook?
If so the setting is probably on your notebook.  Check if there is an intel network icon in control panel or in the start menu.  Alternatively you can access a lot of the functionality of it through device manager.  Open a Run box and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter.  This should open the device manager.  Find your network card and double-click it.  Then go to the advanced tab.  I would suggest looking for a setting like "Link speed".  Auto is usually best for this, but you could try other settings.

Does it go to a switch/hub/router first?
Then the problem is most likely with the switch/hub/router.  Is it an older device?  Can you check if it supports a faster speed?  If it's not the switch/hub/router it might be the notebook, see above.

Is it connected by USB?
I'm not sure how this would work then, it might 'pretend' to be a network card.  It might also 'pretend' it is at a certain speed which might be irrelevant to the actual speed it works at.  You might want to check the manual for the modem.

Have you checked the navini signal strength?  I'm not familiar with it but you might want to look in the manual or on any disks that came with it.

If you need more info please post the detailed test log too, it might help.

navini modem connects through an ethernet cable. PC DOc 5 shows the able test as passed. so i m assumi ng that the cable n the port r error free.

i checked the properties and the link speed is set on auto. if i change then the LAN connection fails.

Now after running Network Diagnostics  get the following report:

As u can see that I have copied all those events which show FAILED result. Pls help me in identifying if it is a system error... do i need to take the laptop to a service centre???...

sitting in a third world country... it is a very big question for me...

Hello again.

I really doubt anything is wrong with your network card, so I wouldn't take the notebook to a service center.  If you have another notebook you could try plugging it in the same way just to verify.

Here's why I think it's fine, but first let me make sure I am understanding this correctly.  The navini modem is for a wide range wireless network right?  Your thinkpad is plugged directly into it (no hub in between) with an ethernet cable.  As a result nearly everyone connected on that network is connected wirelessly.  I think what you are seeing is actually poor wireless reception.
Here's an example from the log:
Quote
Pinging 5.5.5.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 5.5.5.1: bytes=32 time=109ms TTL=109
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Reply from 5.5.5.1: bytes=32 time=109ms TTL=109
4 pings were sent, but only 2 were returned.  I think what happened here is two of the pings were dropped or unreadable because of poor reception or even a faulty tower somewhere.  For each one there are two opportunities for it to be lost; on the way there and on the way back (the reply).
Here's another example:
Quote
Reply from 196.29.212.2: bytes=32 time=1262ms TTL=1262
Reply from 196.29.212.2: bytes=32 time=1119ms TTL=1119
Reply from 196.29.212.2: bytes=32 time=2260ms TTL=2260
Reply from 196.29.212.2: bytes=32 time=1379ms TTL=1379
Ping statistics for 196.29.212.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1119ms, Maximum = 2260ms, Average = 1505ms
 196.29.212.2 (PASSED)
In this one a reply was received each time, but it took an average of 1505ms.  That's 1.5 seconds.  This is probably why your internet is slow.  In fact, I would guess that 10Mbps is probably faster than what you can receive with the modem anyway.
BTW, just for comparison I pinged that same site and got an average of 106ms.

So basically I think your notebook is fine.  I think the poor speed and the test failure are most likely due to the signal the modem is receiving/sending.  You could try a different modem, or you might just want to contact your ISP and see if they can help first.

Thanks for making it so simple! I had gone to ISP sometime back and they had told me that my laptop has a gigabit NIC while they work on megabit and hence there are compatibility issues!!! i have another machine IBM T43, which again has gigabit NIC and hence checking wid that one gave me the same results. The ISP guy told me to route it through a router and that would give me increased speed for net as then compatibility issues would be resolved. for this reason i got a Dlink Wireless router, but seemed to go no where wid that, as there isnt the slightest difference in speed.

that made me think, just logically, that maybe there are issues wid the ISP only... but wasnt able to figure out the whys and hows.

i have called someone wid another brand of machine and another modem to verify this issue. will update u on the conclusions reached thereof.

Best Regards

Thanks ifiknewIT,

I'm glad I could help.

I'm not sure what they're talking about with Gigabit being incompatible with 10Mbit.  Seems a little strange as I would expect that the gigabit NIC should just step down to the correct speed.  You might want to do a little research on that.  I'll wait for your conclusions.

First u check the Ip address of the computer ... if there is vaild ip address in the range of ur modem or router .... then try to ping it..

If dont have ipaddress check the TCP/IP protcol in your computer .... if its disable .First enable the TCP/IP...

if u want increase the speed... check the linkspeed in ur computer... it may in 10mbps... try to increase it  :)
