Title: SMART Extended Self Test failure
Post by: pc-tech on January 11, 2010, 08:23:32 pm
Hi,

I have received PC-Doctor Service Center 7.5 and decided to run on my computer. Sometimes my computer doesn't boot up after Windows logo dissapears. I have run Hard Drive test and found out that SMART Extended Self Test has failed with a red line.
What does SMART really mean? Is it really related to the hard drive and what should I do? I think I should change the hard drive. Thank You in advance.

Henry

pc-tech,

SMART logs are maintained by the drive itself and keep track of read / write errors, temp and other parameters that may indicate the impending failure of the drive.  PC-Doctor reads these logs and reports an error if the drives thresholds have been exceeded (this is all up to the drive itself PC-Doctor does not interpret these it just reports if a drive thinks it's going bad).  Here is some Wikipedia info on SMART http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.).

Any drive that exhibits a SMART failure should be replaced immediately.
