My Hp desktop has been shutting down at random for several weeks.  I have tried all the usual, virus programs, spyware programs, and nothing helped.  I did a registry clean and degrag, still shutting down.  Then I pressed a function key while booting and found PC doctor.  I ran all the diagnostic tests.  The memory failed every test.  I took apart the PC and tried reseating the memory.  Now the PC won't boot.  I have ordered new ram.  Have I done the right thing?

jewklw,

That is what I would have done.

While you are waiting for the new memory to arrive you could try blowing out the memory sockets with canned air and using a pencil eraser to clean the contacts on the memory chips themselves (don't mess with the sockets with anything but air).  Reinstall and see if it will boot. Also be carefull to follow all static procedures.
