Vista Begone! My Windows XP Upgrade Tue, Oct 2. 2007

I tried. I really did. I wanted it to work out between us. But it didn�t.

After one quarter of damnable blue screens, unexplainable freezes and uncountable reboots, I abandoned Windows Vista and upgraded to Windows XP.

That�s right: It�s an upgrade.

Why? XP works and Vista did not. It�s that simple.

I don�t care that Vista works fine for some.

I don�t care that Vista has a few cool features that I would like to use. Cool features don�t mean a whit when the OS frequently flakes.

I do care about productivity. And I care that I�ve lost many, many hours because of Vista.

It�s been two weeks with XP, and guess what? Not a single reboot or freeze or blue screen. Wouldn�t you call that an upgrade?

This is just funny! You are using XP for 2 weeks without "a single reboot or freeze or blue screen" and you are happy? I've been using ubuntu for a year without those things, plus I get much more up to date software. How about stop using outdated B quality products that you need to pay hundreds of dollars for?

T'was a hint of sarcasm, Mark. Of course, you're right. No one should be "happy" about such things, and believe me I'm not. I'd love something faster, more reliable, rock-solid, etc. I actually looked at Ubuntu about a year ago for my personal system (I don't have that choice on the corporate system, which was the one with Vista -- see my earlier entries on the Vista experience), but just not comfortable taking the dive yet. Emphasis on yet.

Has something to do with my aversion to products like StarOffice. I was at Sun when it bought the company and the corporate mandate was for everyone to use it. Terrible application (although I've heard it's much improved). For all the complaints I have about MSFT, the Office apps worked fine.

I have been using Vista for ~3 months and I can hate is just about as much as XP. It does appear to be getting a little better with some of the recent upgrades.

It does require the same sort of feeding as XP - daily reeboot and periodic removal of startup programs and services.

I'm glad to hear Vista is improving with updates, but sadly I'm not getting the benefit. Any attempt to update (automatic or manual) leaves me with a frozen computer - only solution is hold down the power button till it shuts down. I've had the problem for about a month and can find no way out.
Add to that a minimum of 20 minutes to install any program, DirectX not working properly and countless BSODs. It's reached the point where I look forward to the message "not responding" as a sign that the computer is actually doing something! And before anyone recommends it, I've long ago switched off all the eye-candy abd side-bars.
This is a brand new machine, supposedly M$ approved for Vista, with it preinstalled.

I've ordered the "downgrade" (that's a joke) to XP for which of course I have to pay.

Meantime I've installed a dual boot with Kubuntu which quite simply works. If I didn't have so many programs that are Windows dependent I'd kiss it goodbye tomorrow.
