I can understand the frustration of it, but heck, I'm happy as can be. I waited -- until yesterday that is. I've now got me a killer phone for $299. Heck, I paid half that for my Moto Razr. The iPhone truly is a sweet device. Many are upset and I can see why. With the big price drop, they'll probably sell 2 million more in the next 3 months. They pissed off a few early adopters, but it might pay off in the long run.
If Apple just want to be a strictly business without loyal customers, so be it. There were many situations we didn�t need to buy Apple products but we did anyway.
So if Apple is just like another microsoft, why we don�t just choose microsoft or any other company if they have mainstream products and more features.

All the blogs I've seen about this have a set of comments that are either "I'm really pissed too!" or "Ha, ha! Sucks to be you.". I'm afraid I'm going to agree with Chris: "I can understand the frustration of it, but heck, I'm happy as can be." Yeah, I also had a hard time resisting the price drop.
If Apple can keep their customers' frustration level down, then it's going to be a great move on their part. They're going to get a large part of the high-end cell phone market this way.

Nice job of Apple polishing by Jobs. Still, while Steve announced $100 in Apple credit for iPhone users, I was picking up a credit for the full $200.
According to Crave, CNET's gadget blog, I'm not the only one. Here's the link: http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9773060-1.html Some in the office wonder: Was this all planned? That is, announce a Bone Head decision and then give Steve a white horse to ride? It's possible, but I hope not and I think not. It's too risky a move to anger so many people -- particularly when the iPhone (like iPods) user base is so much larger than the traditional Mac base whose fanaticism borders on religion. On the other hand, it's hard to believe that smart Apple people like CorpComms VP Katie Cotton didn't see this coming or didn't yell loud enough for Steve to hear.

I am off to get mine. Its just market economics, they needed volume and 599 would never have got them volume. I am happy that they were sane enough to announce $100 credit as it would have otherwise dented there high customer satisfaction record. Glad you got your refund:). abhi

I think that they found the sales figures disappointing and decided to make a decisive move to boost them. I don't think the customers reactions came as a complete shock to them either; maybe they hoped they could get away with the price cut without having to do any refunds, but they had the store credit option open as a plan B if plan A would fail (which I supposed it did judging from the comments posted on the net).
All in all, I think they were aiming a little high when they set the price to $599, which is quite a lot of money. After the iPod's incredible success it's easy to see why though, but I would guess that a lot of iPods are owned by kids that got them from their parents and though a loving mother might spend $149 on an iPod to her little angel, $599 for an iPhone is a different story. Also, I can't be the only one that thinks that the iPhone is an incredibly cool phone, but would never pay that kind of money to get one.
